About Holyoke Community Charter School (HCCS)

The Holyoke Community Charter School (HCCS) received a charter from the Massachusetts Board of Education in 2000. In September 2005, HCCS opened its doors as a tuition-free public charter school for Holyoke’s school children. In its first year of operation, it served 624 students in grades K-7. The number of students enrolled rose to 702 students in grades K-8 in the 2006-2007 school year.

Enrollment at HCCS is open to all resident school children of Holyoke on a space available basis. Admission is non-selective  and students are admitted to the school by open lottery. If spaces remain after the lottery is conducted, children from surrounding communities may apply for admission.

As a member of the SABIS® School Network, HCCS will provide students with a "college-preparatory" program based on a top-quality education. The educational program is rigorous, demanding, and based on high expectations. We believe that all children can learn.

Mission Statement
The mission of HCCS is to promote the joy of learning and prepare a broad cross section of Holyoke children for success as students, workers, and citizens by providing them with a high-quality public education. Special care will be taken to develop in students the joy of learning. Joy is a powerful motivator but can only be attained if students see themselves as confident, capable learners. Students develop that confidence by working with their teachers to set and achieve goals. that are challenging. When learning activities are challenging, and students believe in their ability to meet those challenges, indifference and reluctance to engage in learning are replaced by an authentic delight in learning. Joy permeates each classroom, and the school as a whole, because students understand that they have acquired the skills and knowledge that enables them to follow their dreams and become agents for positive change through their new-found belief in themselves.
